Biological sulfur fertilizer

Sulfurthat worksin the soil

Unlocks the soil, unleashes the harvest. Scroll to follow one BioSera granule from lump sulfur to sulfate at the roots of wheat.

Scroll

01Raw material

One granule out of thousands

BioSera starts with technical sulfur, a by-product of oil and gas refining in Kazakhstan. In its raw form it barely dissolves, and plants cannot absorb it.

S₈elemental sulfur molecule: eight atoms in a ring

02Milling

The finer, the faster

Sulfur is milled down to micron-sized particles. The surface area grows tens of times over, giving bacteria plenty to hold on to.

mm → µmparticle size before and after milling

03Bentonite

Clay that opens up the granule

Sulfur microparticles are pressed together with bentonite clay. In moist soil the bentonite swells, and the granule breaks into thousands of particles right in the root zone.

90 / 10sulfur and bentonite; ratio from 80/20 to 90/10 as required

04Bacteria

The living part of BioSera

Our own strain of sulfur-oxidizing Thiobacillus bacteria is applied to each granule. They activate with the first moisture and convert sulfur into sulfate, the form roots absorb. Without them, oxidation in soil takes months.

S⁰ → SO₄²⁻bacterial oxidation of sulfur

05Soil

Nutrition at the roots

Water reaches the granule, the bentonite swells, and the particles disperse through the soil. The sulfuric acid that forms gently acidifies the root zone and releases phosphorus locked up by calcium.

06Harvest

A harvest you can see

Plants need sulfur to build protein and oil, and unlocked phosphorus boosts the NPK you already apply. The effect lasts 2–3 seasons, with yield gains of 10–30%.

Problem

You pay — the soil holds back

Kazakhstan's soils are alkaline: applied nutrients get bound up and never reach the plant.

~12.5 Mt

of sulfur a year: the global deficit. Agriculture receives less than half of what it needs1

pH > 7.5

locks up phosphorus: on alkaline and calcareous soils it binds with calcium

75–90%

of fertilizer phosphorus is not taken up in the year of application on alkaline soils. Raising NPK rates doesn’t help2

The problem isn't how much you apply — the soil locks nutrients away.

You've already paid for this phosphorus

Your field holds 50–150 times more phosphorus than the plant can access

Available phosphorus

6–20 mg/kg

That's what a plant can actually take up from soil in the Akmola region. It's the deficit you cover with ammophos every year.

Total phosphorus

> 1,000 mg/kg

That's how much phosphorus sits in the same soil, bound by calcium in an insoluble form the plant can't use.

Every year, ammophos adds to the second number, not the first

On alkaline soil, much of the applied phosphorus binds with calcium and joins the same locked reserve. A farm that has fertilized its fields for 15–20 years has built up tens of kilograms of paid-for but locked phosphorus on every hectare.

There's no shortage of phosphorus. It's locked away.

Solution

We move the factory into the field

Ammophos is made with sulfuric acid. BioSera produces that acid right in the soil: it's the same reaction. Not another fertilizer, but a multiplier for everything you already apply.

At the plant

  1. 01Phosphate rock is insoluble
  2. 02Sulfuric acid is added
  3. 03Phosphorus becomes soluble
  4. 04Finished ammophos is bought and hauled to the field

In the field, with BioSera

  1. 01Calcium phosphates in the soil are insoluble
  2. 02Sulfur bacteria oxidize the granule's sulfur into sulfuric acid
  3. 03Phosphorus becomes soluble
  4. 04The plant takes it up right where it is

How BioSera works

Five steps from granule to root

01

Application

Granules at 150–650 kg/ha at sowing or during primary tillage

02

Activation

On contact with moisture, the bacteria on the granule come to life

03

Sulfur oxidation

Bacteria convert elemental sulfur into SO₄²⁻ sulfates

04

Lower pH

Sulfuric acid gently acidifies the root zone

05

Crops and rates

How much to apply and what you'll get

Two goals, two rates. 100–400 kg/ha supplies sulfur to the crop and covers removal. 600–650 kg/ha is a first-year reclamation rate on soils above pH 7.5: the goal is not nutrition but shifting pH and unlocking phosphorus, and it is the rate used in our trials. Apply during primary tillage or at sowing, incorporated to 5–15 cm.
